Get Out of Your Own Way

Updated: Apr 5

Have you ever said "I need to get out of my own way!"

I have heard this repeatedly from clients and friends.

When people can't get out of their own way, they feel frustrated, paralyzed, and indecisive.

What are people talking about when they say "I need to get out of my own way!" ??

There is nothing physical in their path.

Think of it this way. You have one body, but two selves. One is your Authentic Self and the other is the Ego or the false self. The Ego stands in the way of your most Authentic self and seemingly blocks you.

Have you have ever....

  • doubted yourself?

  • spoke unkindly of yourself?

  • thought that you were not good enough?

  • been jealous?

  • been mistrusting?

  • played too small?

  • operated from your insecurities and wounds?

This is the work of the Ego.

The Ego is a collection of all:

  • those ugly things you said to yourself

  • the back-handed compliments

  • the stupid things people said to you.

  • old conditioning

  • insecurities

  • doubts

  • fears

This collection is like dirt spatters on a window pane; therefore, it is a dirty filter through which you see yourself. Your authentic self gets hidden. Covered actually.

When you operate through this dirty filter you are operating from the space of the Ego.

This is what it means to get in your own way. The Ego is standing in your way. It is preventing you from showing up with all your gifts, talents, creativity and joy.

The BIG question then is How does one GET OUT of their own way?

  • Awareness that you are operating from the Ego.

  • Create a daily practice that connects you to your Highest, most authentic Self....reading, gratitude, prayer, yoga, creativity, journalling OR anything else that connects you to the quiet space inside.

  • Practicing good self talk instead. Stop beating yourself up. Shift your thoughts and language. What are you doing well right now?

  • Stay in the present moment. We often live in the past worrying about what took place or fearful of the future. That is also the Ego. Getting out of your own way is being in the present moment.

  • Take the advice you would give a friend who is struggling to get out of their own way.

  • Action. Nothing builds confidence like doing...something...anything...one step.

When one spends time wiping off the dirty spatters, you see more clearly. You see your authentic self and so can others.

Be your own Personal Coach.

Keep bringing yourself back to the present moment. Challenge your limiting beliefs. Challenge what was told to you about you. Challenge what you have come to believe about you.

Focus on the positive. Acknowledge what is going well and how well you are doing. Find what is true for your life and affirm that.

And soon enough, you will come out from behind your false self to reveal the true you.

Indeed, you will be out of your own way.
