Success on Your Terms

A woman with sunglasses gazing at the sky.

I attended a networking event recently where I received a valuable reminder about success.

As owners shared about their businesses, I listened to one inspiring woman, who operates a successful bath bombs business from her home. She started it a decade ago because her children had eczema. She wanted a product they could use on their sensitive skin.

I was blown away by this sweet, humble woman who was bubbling over with contagious energy. She had figured out a successful business model and a great product. After the meeting I chatted with her excited to hear how well she was doing. I exclaimed, “This business could be huge.”

Knowing What You Want

She instantly responded, “I don’t want that.” Most people I’ve met in business want to get as big as they possibly can or be the best in some way.

What I adored about her was her confidence and certainty about what she wanted. She loved her business just the way it was. She loves her customers and loves serving them well. Her business was manageable for her. She didn't want to get into shipping and distribution. It would take away from what she loves - creating and serving in a way that fills her up.

Success on Your Terms Brings You Joy

The size of her current business brought her a lot of joy and you could see that expressed in her face. She feared that if she grew it to something larger, she would no longer enjoy it. That is so important! She knew what she wanted and lived by it. How many people know what they want and don't listen to the voice within?

The Reminder about Success on your terms

Define success for you, not what others say it is. It became abundantly clear that not everyone wants to reach society’s definition of the “the pinnacle.” The pinnacle is whatever you want.

Creating Success on your terms

The next time you wish you were more successful, think of why you want it.

Do you want success for the sake of it?

Will more money bring you happiness?

Will more recognition bring fulfillment?

Why are you trying to achieve what you're trying to achieve?

Define what success means to you.

What is your pinnacle?

How will you know when you have arrived?

What does success feel like for you?

Be satisfied with your definition of success, not how other people define it. Success on your terms is what's important.
